I didn't read this post until after I returned from the Quad-Cities Writers' Conference, but it coincides exactly with the advice I gave more than one prospective nonfiction author (and need to remember myself). Fiction or nonfiction, the power of story is what holds readers' interest. Thanks for this strong reminder.

Susy, thanks for pointing out that stories reign supreme in magazine (and newspaper, I might add) articles as well as in books.
Karen, I'm glad I could introduce you to Dinner with a Perfect Stranger; it's fascinating to study what made the book work.

I so appreciate your distillation of meetings with editors at Mount Hermon. Thank you for sharing with us! And to your point, I know when I read feature articles in magazines, I often read the anecdotes with intensity, and scan over or even skip entirely the factual content. It's often boring and just a rehash of articles I've seen many times before. But the personal stories....love them.
